Our departmental store in Forfar hosts a wide range of items including DIY, Tools, Ironmongery, Kitchenware, Bathroom Accessories, Electrical Goods and much more!
After taking over the building in 2015, we have redesigned the layout of the store through months of refurbishment and hard work to provide our customers the best shopping experience. We have continued to provide a high quality of service to our valued customers and with the expansion of our online store we are looking to reach a wider audience and continue provide a high level of customer support.
With the launch our new website, we are looking to take our high street store online and to allow our valued customers to shop from the comfort of their homes.
Timeline
1840 – George Irons formed a partnership with his cousin to open the ironmongers and seed business at 14 East High Street, Forfar in 1840. The partnership lasted for 10 years before it was dissolved and the business carried on by George, who died in 1872.
1872 – His son David Irons Snr continued the business, before it passed to his sons David Irons Jnr and William.
1907 – In 1907, they bought Petrie’s Temperance Hotel in Castle Street and transformed it into the current premises, opening the current site in November 1908. It included a water operated lift which was installed in 1908 is still operational today.
On the death of David Irons Jnr, the business was carried on by his son William, then his sons Michael and Marshall.
2005 – The business was sold to the Queen’s First cousin in 2005, the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, who is one of Scotland’s richest landowners said he was keen to retain the character and charm of the shop, which he had fond memories of visiting as a child.
2012 – Prince Charles visited David Irons & Sons during the Black Watch Parade in 2012 where he met the Earl of Strathmore and the shop’s staff.
2015 – Present Day – In 2015, the shop was sold to local businessmen Raza Ahmed, previous owner of the Nickel & Dime Store on 43 East High Street. Raza decided to keep the trading name due to its long 179-year history and kept many of the iconic features in the shop. However, the store has now had major refurbishment and now has the capacity to stock thousands of items.
